How Zakat Is Calculated

Zakat is 2.5% of your total zakatable wealth, once your wealth has stayed above the nisab for one full lunar year. Add up your cash, savings, gold, silver, business inventory and investments, subtract your immediate debts, and then take 2.5% of what remains.

What Is Nisab?

Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth after which zakat becomes due. It is commonly set at about 87.5 grams of gold or about 612 grams of silver. Because the value of gold and silver changes, the nisab in your currency changes as well, so always use the current market price. Scholars differ on whether to use the gold or silver nisab, so follow the opinion your local scholar recommends.

What Is Zakat Paid On?

  • Cash in hand and money in bank accounts
  • Gold and silver, including jewellery in many opinions
  • Business stock and trade goods
  • Savings, investments and money owed to you that you expect to receive

What Is Not Included?

In general, items for personal use are not included, such as the home you live in, your personal car and everyday household items. If you are unsure about a specific asset, ask a qualified scholar.
